Smell gas near plumbing? Get out first
A rotten-egg smell near your water heater or gas line is a safety issue, not a plumbing one. Here's what to do.

Natural gas has a strong rotten-egg smell that utilities add on purpose. If you notice it, act first and investigate later.
Leave the home
Get everyone out, including pets. Don't light matches, use lighters, switch lights on or off, or use a phone inside the house. Sparks can ignite gas.
Call for help from outside
Once you're clear of the building, call your gas utility's emergency line. In San Diego, that's SDG&E. If you can't reach them, call 911 from outside.
Don't go back in
Wait until the utility or fire department says the building is safe. Don't turn appliances or gas valves on or off yourself.
Why plumbers don't handle this alone
Gas leaks are for the gas utility to find and fix. A plumber can help with the water heater or the pipe once the gas company has confirmed the area is safe.
